Why we created this mask
If you colour your hair with pure henna and indigo, you may have noticed something: your henna tone holds up well over time, but the indigo component — responsible for deeper browns and blacks — tends to fade faster, sometimes leading to colour bleeding or patchy regrowth within a few weeks.
This isn't a flaw in your technique. It's simply how indigo behaves on natural hair colour. Indigo has a larger molecular structure than henna, and instead of bonding directly to the hair shaft, it needs to latch onto the henna molecules already deposited there. When henna is loosely bound to hair, indigo has a weaker surface to grip onto — so it fades faster and greys can show through sooner than expected.
The real reason natural hair colour fades faster than expected
This is the most common question we hear from henna and indigo users: "why does my colour not last as long as I expect?" The answer almost always comes back to this same henna-indigo binding step — not the quality of the herbs themselves, but whether they've been given the right support to bond properly on the first wash.
We created the Krya Colour Lock Hair Mask specifically to address this. It is formulated as a first-wash treatment — used immediately after any Krya henna or indigo hair colour — to help henna bind more firmly to the hair strand, giving indigo a stronger foundation to hold onto in turn.
How it works
The mask is built around Ayurvedic herbs traditionally used in ayurvedic hair colour and hair care routines to support strength and pigment retention — including Triphala, Shikakai, Khadira and Amla — combined with conditioning oils like Karanja and Babchi. Each herb is:
-
Sourced as organically grown grain, lentil or forest-collected raw material
-
Processed individually to preserve its specific nutrient profile
-
Ground and processed until it naturally forms a creamy paste — with no added synthetic base — designed to sit on the hair shaft during the crucial first wash after colouring
This process takes about a week from raw herb to finished batch, because we clean, cure and process each ingredient separately rather than using pre-mixed powders. This is what distinguishes a chemical free mask that simply sits on hair from one that actively supports the colour-binding process taking place underneath.
When and how to use it
The first wash after henna and indigo is the most important one
Apply the Krya Colour Lock Hair Mask on your first wash after colouring with any Krya single-step or two-step (Dwii) henna-indigo hair colour. Use it before your regular Krya hair wash powder or cleanser, allow it to sit briefly on damp hair, then rinse thoroughly. This first-wash window is when henna is still setting into the hair shaft — using the mask at this stage is what helps your natural hair colour last longer rather than fading within the first few washes.
What makes this formulation different
The Krya Colour Lock Hair Mask contains no synthetic builders, fillers, silicones, preservatives or fragrances — making it a genuinely chemical free hair colour companion, not just a marketing claim. Every ingredient is declared on this page, and every ingredient originates from a plant, processed minimally to retain its natural properties. Like all Krya products, it is completely vegan and cruelty-free.
Hair and scalp health are also closely tied to diet — a steady intake of good-quality protein, vitamins and minerals supports the same colour and hair strength this mask is designed to protect. Visit the Krya blog for more on nutrition for hair health.
How to Use the Krya Colour Lock Hair Mask
Purpose of this mask
The Krya Colour Lock Hair Mask is a colour-strengthening treatment — the first rinse-off product recommended after any naturally coloured hair application. It is formulated to strengthen the bond between henna, indigo and other natural hair colour herbs and your hair strand, helping your colour last longer between applications.
Use it 1-2 days after colouring. For Dwii two-step colour, use it 1-2 days after Step 2.
Steps to apply
-
Make a thick, non-drippy paste of the hair mask.
-
Using a henna brush, evenly coat the coloured hair strands.
-
Cover your hair with cling film or a shower cap to seal in warmth and moisture.
-
Keep the mask on for at least 45 minutes.
-
Once the mask begins to dry, it's time to rinse.
-
Rinse out the mask thoroughly with plain water. You may notice some unlatched hair colour rinsing out — this is normal and not a cause for concern.
Post-mask oiling and wash
-
We recommend applying hair oil to your strands and scalp for 2-3 days after the mask, to ease any post-colouring stiffness.
-
After this 2-3 day oiling period, wash your hair with the Krya hair wash powder suited to your hair type.
Use this mask every time you colour your hair, for the best colour latching and long-term colour fastness.

Our Formulation Approach
Each herb is sourced as a whole raw material and processed separately in-house using traditional Ayurvedic methods, to retain its individual nutrient profile. We do not use extracts, fillers, preservatives, fragrance, silicones, detergents, or synthetic colourants — only whole, traditionally processed herbs, ground until they naturally form a creamy paste.
All 13 ingredients are fully declared — nothing is hidden under "base," "colour blend," or proprietary mixes.
