Why use a natural herb and lentil based bodywash powder and not a soap / synthetic liquid bodywash / gel?

The Krya Bodywash is an excellent natural alternative to skin pH altering , drying and toxin laden synthetic bodywash products and soaps.

Even the gentlest hand made soap is unsuitable for skin as it has a naturally alkaline pH of 9 and above which alters the pH of skin everytime you use it and also wipes out the microflora colony locally, which needs to eb built back again.

Historically, the soap format was only used to do the laundry or to have a very infrequent bath as was practiced in cold countries. In tropical countries like India with a  rich history of sophisticated medicine systems and the wide variety of healing herbs and grains, we always used a carefully made mixture of edible grains , lentils and a careful selection of herbs processed together.

This mixture is extremely gentle and soothing on skin. By the combination of herbs chosen, it helps build immunity by encouraging the right strains of skin microflora which act as our body’s first line of defense. Additionally, the correct combination and processing of these ingredients helps balance locally deranged doshas in the skin, giving us a complete Snana /Bathing experience.

Why are Krya Bodywash products powders and not ready-to use liquids:

All Krya Bodywash products come in a Choornam (ayurvedic blended powder) format. So they need to be mixed in water / appropriate liquid to be used on skin.

We formulate all our cleansers as Choornams for the following reasons:

1. To make the formulation more potent and nutritive:

In all water based products, water forms over 85% of the product by weight, leaving very little room for actual nutrients /botanicals. In a Choornam format, on the other hand, we can load the product with a high concentration of active nutrients.

2. To avoid the use of toxic preservatives, thickeners, fragrances and additives

When Water is added to a formulation there is immediately a high risk of bacterial / fungal contamination. To minimize this risk, synthetic preservatives like parabens need to be added.

Adding water also limits the shelf life of a product and it goes rancid over time – to neutralize any off odors, synthetic fragrances are usually added.

Similarly to make the product thick and non watery, thickening additives and fillers are usually added to liquid products.

By making a dry Ayurvedic Choornam format, we can immediately avoid the use of all these chemical additives.

3. To minimize the products Environmental footprint

When liquid products are made, we cannot do without rigid plastic packaging. The product also occupies a higher volume and higher space during transport. Additionally, we use Water which is a very old, and precious resource to create these products and further synthetics to render these products stable and attractive.

By choosing a powder format, we are able to create a highly compact product and avoid using scarce resources like Water. Instead of rigid LDPE / PP packaging, we use very high quality Virgin HDPE packaging inners in an outer corrugated box. The Corrugated box can be recycled many many times and the Inner HDPE can be recycled like old Milk covers and have high value in the recycling system. We will be soon phasing out these Inners and moving to a more sustainable option to reduce our products Environmental footprint.

How to use the Krya Bodywash Choornam:

Store the Krya Bodywash Choornam in a clean, air-tight container. For each use, please use a dry spoon to ladle out the product. As the product is made from edible organic grains, lentils and herbs, moisture can cause growth of fungus or attract insects to the product.

For each use, we recommend using 2 – 3 tablespoons (heaped) of the product in a  clean container. To this, add cool water and form a thick paste that has the consistency of thick Idli / Pancake Batter. Use this paste to have a bath instead of a Soap / synthetic Bodywash / Body gel.

Apply the product in large , circular motions all over the skin. Avoid private parts. Allow the product to stay on skin for 1 – 2 minutes before washing off for greater cleansing effect. Do not allow the product to dry out on skin.

The Krya Bodywash is NOT formulated as an abhyanga product and will not remove abhyanga oil. For post Abhyanga Baths, please use our Krya Ubtans which are formulated to work with Abhyanga oil and have a warming, Vata balancing nature.
