Product Description

Applying a turmeric face mask or adding turmeric to an ubtan is a traditional Indian practice. Weddings and self care beauty routines inevitably involve turmeric, atleast in India. This practice comes from Ayurveda which celebrates Turmeric for its multiple skin and health benefits. These include the ability to improve skin lustre, enhance skin’s glow and wound healing properties.

The Ayurvedic benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric is a renowned ayurvedic herb that is used extensively in cooking, as medicine, and in external applications. It has immuno-modulatory, wound healing, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, drying, and hot properties. It is actively used in diseases like Diabetes, atherosclerosis, allergic rhinitis, anemia, etc.

In Ayurveda, Turmeric is considered to have skin complexion improving, wound healing, anti-allergic, and detoxification properties. It reduces intestinal worms, improves skin health, relieves pain and inflammation, and balances all 3 doshas.

The Benefits of a Turmeric face mask

Turmeric is an excellent skin herb and besides its medicinal properties, it is also considered to be Mangalya (auspicious in nature) and imparts positive prana. Therefore it is an essential herb used in Women’s skincare products in traditional medicine.

With regular use, Turmeric can lighten lanugo (down in children) and also thin down and lighten facial hair (as long as there is no major underlying hormonal imbalance).

Different types of Turmeric in India

Turmeric and turmeric-like herbs are abundant in India. Turmeric-like herbs, like Daruharidra, are actually of a different species. However, in Ayurveda, because they behave similar to Turmeric, they are clubbed under the same class as Turmeric.

The main Turmeric species is Curcuma longa which we use extensively in Indian cooking. We also have many turmeric subspecies like wild turmeric, aromatic turmeric, mango turmeric available in India. Even within Curcuma longa,  there exist regional variations depending upon the climatic conditions under which the herb grows.

Himalayan turmeric, Lakadong turmeric, and South Indian turmeric are all geographically varied versions of the basic turmeric species. They differ in aroma, colour, and curcumin content, besides having slight variation in medicinal properties.

How we formulate the Krya Mangalya Lepa

To incorporate a large range of Turmeric’s benefits, we use Turmeric from South India, and Himalayan Turmeric. We have also used different kinds of Turmeric like Aromatic Turmeric (Curcuma zeodaria), Tree Turmeric, and Kasturi Turmeric.

Most Turmeric species are hot in nature, so they can be drying on skin that is already dry, sensitive, or irritable. Hence in this face mask we have added other balancing colder herbs like Amla, Yashtimadhu, and Indian Rose . These herbs are also complexion improving and enhancing and have a sweet, cold property to balance Turmeric’s dry, bitter and astringent property. Please check our Ingredients tab for the full list of Ingredients.

However, the mixture still is largely made of Turmeric, so it will be hot and dry in its property.
