Just how toxic is your synthetic hair colour? Plenty, says the EU. The EU Commission has currently banned 22 ingredients that are commonly found in hair dyes, and is currently investigating over 150 chemicals which are suspected to be carcinogenic and are found in synthetic hair dyes.

Hair dye and carcinogens:

Research studies show a higher prevalence of bladder cancer among hairdressers and barbers. A report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that some of the chemicals these workers are exposed to occupationally like those in hair dyes are “probably carcinogenic to humans”.

Hair dye users were also found to have increased risk of both follicular lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia / small lymphocytic lymphoma.

Other toxic side effects of synthetic hair dyes:

Our research on the side effects on hair dyes have thrown up several alarming results. We have studied many published research papers in India that have painstakingly chronicled the long term effects of using synthetic dyes.

Apart from being carcinogenic, synthetic hair dyes can also cause a host of side effects like contact dermatitis, severe allergies, severe throat and eye irritation, lung irritation and can also trigger rheumatoid arthritis.

In addition to this, the Ophthalmology Department of PGIMER Chandigarh has also published a paper about the Cataractogenous effect of hair dyes . Patients using hair dyes for over a year were observed to have abnormal changes in their lens, and 96% of the patients surveyed showed lenticular changes like opacity in a part of the eye, and early development of cataracts. The study concluded that use of a hair dye could accelerate the formation of cataracts by almost 14 years – so if the average population developed senile cataracts at 59 – 60, a hair dye user was likely to develop a cataract around 45 years!

The non toxic answer to toxic synthetic hair dyes? – Krya!

Is there a way out if you want to safely cover up your greys, or touch up your roots, or for your parents to safely colour their hair?

Try Krya’s all natural range of hair colours. The Krya natural range of hair colour is formulated using safe ayurvedic herbs like Lawsonia inermis (Henna), Indigofera tinctoria (Indigo), Phyllanthus embelica (Amla), Eclipta Alba (Bhringaraj) and other renowned hair herbs. We have formulated these colours to give you a range of shades ranging from soft black to a natural black with brown tones. We will expand our range of colours to include more colours as we continue to research and formulate these colours.

Every individual product page contains details of the herbs used in hair colour, the shade you can expect on your hair, and how much grey coverage you can expect. As with all purely plant based colours, the Krya hair colour is also a semi permanent colour. We expect the colours to start fading between 3 – 4 weeks depending on your sun exposure and washing frequency. The good news is that repeated colouring gives you a richer and deeper shade – and all of this comes without any harmful side effects.

As with all Krya products, the Krya hair colours are also synthetics free – the Krya hair colour range contains ONLY Ayurvedic herbs. They do not contain PPD, Ammonia, Resorcinol, tetrahydro-6-nitroquinoxaline, Eugenol, Coal Tar, Formaldehyde, DMDM Hydantoin, Eugenol, or ANY SYNTHETIC CHEMICAL.

Krya’s hair colours are also free from metallic salts and contain only hand-picked, sorted, sun dried and carefully processed Ayurvedic herbs. We process our herbs from scratch, choosing only the best quality materials. The formulations have been developed in-house after rigorous testing done over a year on human hair swatches, in-house volunteers and an independent consumer panel.
