..Are you looking for a way to shrink open pores naturally and heal oily, easily irritated pitta prakriti skin? A common complaint we hear from people with oily skin is the presence of visible, large open pores on skin. We have discussed in depth the problems that Pitta prakriti skin faces in earlier posts. Due to a high accumulation of sebum, dirt and dead cells and micro organisms, the Srotas in this skin type are easily clogged. This leads to large, visible open pores which we discussed in detail in our earlier blog post on the subject.
Pitta prakriti skin is sensitive and easily irritated , and tricky to take care of . It can very easily get aggravated by the wrong skin care techniques and products. If you are in despair over white heads, clogged and large visible pores , this post with Ayurvedic advice to shrink open pores naturally is for you. Read on for a complete set of do’s and don’ts to visibly heal and look after oily skin.
Before we start, this advice helps refine skin, balance skin sebum, unclog pores and gives your skin an even refined appearance. While we speak about “shrinking open pores naturally” in this post, we are really explaining the way to make them look even and less prominent and ensure they are unclogged and smooth. Pores end up looking more visible when the skin is oily, clogged and uneven . When sebum balance and other pitta signs are corrected, pores naturally look less visible, more toned and even. No cosmetic technique can actually “enlarge” or “shrink” pores – but we can make the appearance even, smooth by correcting the skin’s underlying issues of pitta aggravation. How do we do this? Read on for our 7 pitta skin healing techniques.
1. Shrink open pores naturally: do not aggravate oiliness by over cleansing
Over cleansing oily skin can irritate and aggravate Pitta dosha, making this skin oilier! This can also happen if you over-cleanse skin with drying wipes, microfibre cloths and using harsh products. The excessive oiliness can attract more micro organisms and dead cells. This in turn makes pores look much more visible and bigger on skin.
Do not use microfiber based cleansing cloths or cleansing wipes on oily, Pitta prakriti skin. These tend to dry out the surface of skin, provoking aggressive oil secretion, making skin even more prone to break-outs.
If your skin starts to develop an oily sheen mid-day, simply splash clean, cold water on your skin and pat dry with a clean cotton face towel. For daily cleansing always use a gentle, mild and Pitta balancing natural face wash. Krya has options for Men and women, given at the end of the post.
2. Do not touch or pick at breakouts:
Our fingertips are full of dirt, microbes and sebum from handling of the keyboard, smartphone, etc. If you touch your facial skin often, you will keep on transferring fresh microbes to your skin, encouraging breakouts. This in turn enlarges the appearance of open pores.
Pitta based prakritis are also rich in sour, spicy and salty exudations from sweat, sebum, etc. These tastes trigger inflammation and are also irritating on skin. So when we keep on touching skin with fingers that are full of these tastes, these rasas will provoke small inflammations and bumps on skin, further enlarging open pores.
Everything pitta prakritis touch like phones, keyboards, etc will also be rich in these exudations and will have sebum with amla, katu and lavana rasa. So it is important for those prone to acne and open pores to keep the phone, and keyboards clean and oil free. Periodic cleansing keeps down microbes, which in turn helps skin.
3. Re-set skin health at night
A night cleansing routine is especially critical to oily, Pitta prakriti skin. Cleansing skin at night by using a gentle ayurvedic face wash formulated for pitta prakriti skin helps re-sets your skin’s health everyday. This also prevents build up of oil and debris in the srotas, which brings down size of open pores.
Offices harbour a surprising amount of hidden dirt and microbes in their unclean and dirty airconditioning vents and filters. Skin which is exposed to clogged, dirty air, absorbs this dirt, blocking the minor Srotas, enlarging open pores. Regular night cleansing cleans skin, removes trapped debris and helps shrink open pores and reduce breakouts.
4. Shrink open pores naturally: balanced skin nourishment is key
Apply a good, natural, balanced ayurvedic facial serum / facial oil. Choosing the right product is key for pitta prakriti skin . Pitta prakriti oily skin tends to be very delicate and extremely irritable.
An over greasy product can irritate and upset the balance in oily skin causing more damage than good. A product which does does not cool and hydrate pitta prakriti skin will leave it looking red and flushed.
Krya recommends using the Krya Classic skin serum for oily skin. This skin balancing oil is formulated with ayurvedic herbs and oils like Clove, Neem oil, Durva, Pomegranate, Vetiver, & Indian Sarsaparilla.
This balancing skin oil dries out excess oil, cools skin, improves and evens out skin tone and brightens the complexion . It thus gently heals and nourishes oily, Pitta Prakriti skin without aggravating it. With consistent use, our users report having even sebum production, brighter complexion and smaller, less visible open pores.
The Krya Classic skin oil is NOT recommended for skin that is prone to dryness, mature skin, etc. These skin conditions require one of our other facial oils.
5. A healing ayurvedic mask nurtures and balances oily skin
Ayurveda encourages the use of healing Lepas (masks) to nourish and rejuvenate different kinds of skin. A healing Lepa (mask) is very good for oily, Pitta prakriti skin to help tone, and nourish it and cleanse it deeply. As we have seen, when oily skin is deep cleansed and the srotas are free, pores do not look large or visible.
Krya recommends using the Krya classic face mask once a week to heal and cleanse oily, pitta prakriti skin. This mask contains Shothahara (inflammation reducing) herbs like Arjuna, Khadira, which shrink open pores, whiteheads and acne. It also contains many blemish correcting, pitta balancing and complexion brightening herbs like Manjishta, Ela (cardamom), Bilwa, etc. Continued, regular use of the mask helps heal, deep cleanse, balance and nourish oily, break-out prone, Pitta prakriti skin.
For Men, We recommend using the Krya Classic Men’s Face Mask. The Krya Men’s Classic Face Mask is a 43 Ayurvedic herb formulation that uses herbs for de-clogging congested skin, deep cleansing skin, evening out sebum production, cooling and soothing skin, and over time ensuring an even, healthy appearance of skin. We use potent Ayurvedic herbs like Patranga, Cloves, Kalmegh, Palash Pushpa , etc in this formulation.

6. Balance skin by balancing pitta dosha internally:
Follow all the pitta pacifying measures suggested by us in our earlier primer to Oily skin. Eat on time, and choose the right food for your body type. Pitta Prakriti has to be pacified with freshly cooked warm foods that are mild, sweet, cooling and do not have sharp salty, sour or spicy tastes. For more on a pitta pacifying diet please read this and this.
Food must be chewed properly and eaten only when hungry. Cow ghee should be used frequently. Fried and oily foods should be kept to a minimum.
In addition, the scalp must be cooled through the regular application of a good ayurvedic hair oil. Krya recommends using the Krya Classic hair oil to pacify pitta aggravation.
7. Reduce stress by switching off everyday
Switch off once you come back to work. This is critical to balance stress and mood aggravation which in turn affects and stresses out skin.
Follow a calming routine every evening to help pacify aggravated Pitta dosha. This includes calming yogic poses like shavasana, wearing cool, pastel colours, regular evening meditation, and a screen free evening.

To sum up: how to improve the appearance of open pores and skin health in oily skin
Oily skin is extremely well understood in Ayurveda as being a manifestation of Pitta dosha in skin. This can arise due to improper ahara, use of wrong products on skin or because of the inherent constitution of the individual.
Proper external skin care is critical in pitta aggravated skin. The skin care products chosen must be gentle, mild, soothing, refreshing and gently balance Pitta using Madhura, Tikta and Kashaya rasas (sweet, bitter and astringent tastes). When Pitta skin is treated with harsh products, it further inflames and gets irritated leading to higher aggravation in sebum production, rashes, acne , etc. In this post, we explored many important facets to pitta skin care including not over handling it, choosing right ahara and right products to manage this skin.
